James Lynch

Jim is a former principal soprano cornet with the National Youth Brass band of Great Britain where he was awarded the Newman Cup at the age of 17 for the “Most Improved Player” and is a former lead trumpet with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. He studied with Fred Kelly at the City of Leeds College of Music, where he gained a first-class degree in Jazz and Contemporary Music and won prizes for Outstanding Performance, Brass and Arranging. Jim has played with all of Britain’s leading big bands including the BBC Big Band, the John Wilson Orchestra, the Don Lusher Big Band, the Syd Lawrence Orchestra and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. He has played in dozens of West End shows and is currently free-lancing in Wicked, Matilda, Shrek and Sweeney Todd. In the world of pop music he has played in the big bands of Robbie Williams, Rufus Wainwright and Matthew Herbert appearing with London rapper Dizzy Rascal and for Babybird, Embrace, The Freestylers, Beverly Knight and Missy Elliot. He was brass arranger, contractor and first trumpet for the Spice Girls on their 1999 UK tour which was broadcast live from London’s Earl Court on Sky TV. In light entertainment he has played with Shirley Bassey, Michael Ball, Engelbert Humperdink and Lesley Garret and has guested as lead trumpet on lighter music programmes with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Britten Sinfonia, the Northern Sinfonia and the RTE Concert Orchestra. Jim is a member of the John Wilson Orchestra Film credits include the Grammy-nominated soundtrack of Beyond the Sea starring Kevin Spacey for which he also arranged elements of the musical score. Jim can also be heard as trumpet soloist on BBC 1’s The One Show and Cash in the Attic theme tunes. In 1998, as a member of the band Touch and Go, Jim performed and co-wrote the top three hit “Would You…?” whoch went on to sell more than half a million copies worldwide. This track, along with songs from a following album “I Find You Very Attractive” have been licenced for use in films and TV programmes such as Forces of Nature, Virtual Sexuality, My First Mister, Hacker, As If and American High. Jim continues to tour as a member of this band worldwide.
