Matt Perry

Matt began studying percussion at the age of 12, with Annie Oakley of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He went on to study Music at Oxford University, then Timpani and Percussion at the Royal College of Music, before joining Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra as Principal Timpani in 1999. In 2006 he took up his current position as Principal Timpani of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, followed by teaching appointments at Trinity Laban from 2008, and the Royal College of Music in 2009. He also freelances with other orchestras when time and opportunities allow. Outside work Matt is a very keen sportsman, and has completed a Lands End to John O’Groats bike ride, an Ironman triathlon and a sub 3-hour marathon. These are becoming rapidly distant memories, however, as he is now father to a 2 year old son which is both far more rewarding and exhausting!
