Ai No Corrida

Ai No Corrida is a song by Chaz Jankel, written by Jankel and Kenny Young. It was first recorded in 1980 and featured on Chaz Jankel's debut album Chas Jankel for A&M Records. The title of the song was taken from the French-Japanese film In the Realm of the Senses. The song was covered by Quincy Jones in 1981 on his album The Dude, with vocals by Patti Austin. Jerry Hey and Quincy Jones received the 1982 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement for their recording of this song. Charles Jeremy Jankel (born April 1952), better known as Chaz Jankel, is an English singer, songwriter, arranger, composer, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. In a music career spanning more than 40 years, Jankel came to prominence in the late 1970s as the guitarist and keyboardist of the rock band Ian Dury and the Blockheads. With Dury, Jankel co-wrote some of the band's best-known songs including Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick and Reasons to Be Cheerful, Part 3. In addition to his work with the Blockheads, Jankel had a solo career which has resulted in nine studio albums and has a long list of credits as both a performer and as songwriter. Kenny Young (born Shalom Giskan) was an American songwriter, musician, producer and environmental campaigner who wrote and in some cases produced hit songs for The Drifters, Herman's Hermits, Reparata and the Delrons, Clodagh Rodgers and Quincy Jones, among others. His most successful and famous songs as a writer include Under the Boardwalk (co-written with Artie Resnick), and the Grammy Award winning song, Ai No Corrida.

Jock McKenzie studied trumpet at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester where he was a joint recipient of the college’s concerto prize. Since 1987 Jock has based his musical career in Hampshire, working as a freelance trumpeter, conductor, composer, arranger and brass teacher. Currently Jock holds the position of Professional Leader (Brass) for Hampshire Music Service and is the Director of the Hampshire County Youth Band. It is the mix of all of these musical roles that has led to Jock establishing a reputation as a leading creator of brass music resources, particularly in the field of education and brass ensemble music. In 2020 Jock was awarded an “Honorary Fellowship of the University of Winchester” for services to music education. Currently Jock is working part-time for the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama; providing tuition for their Brass Teaching Module. In 2024 Jock was given the award for “Services to Youth” by Brass Bands England.
