Description

Gwerzy is a composition by the Irish band Kila. Kíla was founded in 1987 at Coláiste Eoin, an Irish secondary school in County Dublin. In 1988, when Kíla appeared at the European Youth Music Festival in Bonn, Germany, they were joined by new member Colm O’Snodaigh. The most outstanding feature of this group is that all their songs are sung in Irish. On the one hand KIla are rooted in the Irish tradition, both in style and instrumentation. However, what stands them apart from so many of their contemporaries is their ability to blend their ‘Irish sound’ with so many other influences from around the globe. This manifests this not just in their musical sound but also in its presentation whether onstage or video. Gwerzy provides a typical example of this - traditional Irish band instruments playing a reel that is pushed off-piste by the incorporation of Balkan rhythms and meter, reminiscent of the Balkan brass band repertoire.

“Stunning playing all round and a perfect 'snapshot' of the incredibly high standards of performance in brass playing in London today."
