Milenberg was a town on the southern shore of Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana that was absorbed into the city of New Orleans. Important in the early development of jazz. Bands from different parts of the city and across racial lines would listen to each other and try to outdo each other here. The area is commemorated by the New Orleans Rhythm Kings. The New Orleans Rhythm Kings were one of the most influential jazz bands of the early to mid-1920s.The band included New Orleans and Chicago musicians who helped shape jazz and influence many younger jazz musicians. Dixieland, sometimes referred to as hotjazz or traditional jazz, is a style of jazz based on the music that developed in New Orleans at the start of the 20th century. Much performed traditional Dixieland tunes include: When the Saints Go Marching In, Muskrat Ramble, Struttin' with Some Barbecue, Tiger Rag, Basin Street Blues and Milenberg Joys. All of these tunes were widely played by jazz bands of the pre-World War 2 era, especially by Louis Armstrong.
