Description

Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687) was born in Florence, Italy. He worked his way up the hierarchy at the palace at Versailles, from kitchen-boy, language teacher, dancer, and finally court composer to the King Louis XIV, the “Sun King”. His duties included supplying music for the most grandiose court entertainments; to this end he, in collaboration with the great playwright Molière, created a new form entitled the “comédie-ballet” such as operas and ballets, to more intimate settings such as music to accompany banquets.

The Marche du Savoye is the official Royal March of the Duke of Savoy. It is most famous for having been played at the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Turin (1706), after the Imperial Piedmontese victory over the French Royal Army, to salute the fleeing enemy leaving Piedmont and heading for home.

“This intriguing "water-borne" voyage runs the gamut from more classically-tinged interpretations to straight-ahead and improvised jazz. Along that journey we are treated to a highly inspired and masterfully presented performance.”
